Home and art: creating, performing and researching home
Following years of neglect or even ridicule among modernist artists, the home has become a prevalent theme of contemporary art. This recent ‘turn to the domestic’ has involved an engagement with houses and homes as both sites and subjects of artistic practice, including performance art, photography, film, installation art, sculpture and illustration. Such work has been conceptual or starkly realist, as artists have explored, through different media, the emotional and metaphorical possibilities of the home as well as the potential of home for critiquing aspects of everyday life.
The diverse meanings of home have also attracted wide-ranging academic interest. Research spanning disciplines including geography, anthropology, sociology and art history has explored, for example, the social, economic and political structures that impact on home, the material culture of home and the domestic imaginary. Often informed by urban theory, emerging scholarship has investigated the relationships between home and the city. Recent years have also witnessed increasing scholarly attention to artwork on home, art in domestic spaces and the aesthetic practices of the home. Building on this surge of academic and artistic interest in the home and domesticity, this workshop will provide a sustained engagement between different approaches to understanding the home and art.
The workshop will include keynote talks by Professor Gill Perry (Open University) and artist Sutapa Biswas in addition to three interdisciplinary panels involving performances, presentations, films and displays.
The event is free, but please register using Eventbrite. Closing date for registration is: Friday 24th April at 5pm. If you have any dietary requirements or any other questions please contact email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org.
